Who is who? Memes galore after Ssenyonyi is appointed People Power spokesperson

When Joel Ssenyonyi left the confines of NTV studios last year to join Kyadondo East legislator Robert Kyagulanyi to protest against the Social Media Tax, he probably did not know that he would today be speaking on behalf of People Power.

Well, on Tuesday barely a week after quitting NTV, the 32-year-old was named People Power spokesperson in a not so elaborate presser in Kamwokya.

“Joel Ssenyonyi is an intelligent young Ugandan, accomplished professional, and devoted patriot. He is a man of unquestionable integrity with an impeccable record in speaking out against injustice, bad governance and the many evils that bedevil our society,” Kyagulanyi said in praise of the journalist who once contested for Central Youth Member of Parliament on Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) ticket.

His appointment quickly made rounds on social media with some cheeky Ugandans making ‘not so cool comparisons’ between him and the government mouthpiece Ofwono Opondo in memes that have since gone viral and generated hundreds of comments on both twitter and facebook.

In one hilarious meme, a photo of Opondo in an oversized overall in the Capital FM studios is photoshopped next to a dapper Ssenyonyi, with the caption ‘People Power Spokesman vs Omwogezi wa Government.’

Another photo of Ssenyonyi, during today’s unveiling complete with People Power signature red beret, next to an Opondo one read ‘Spokesperson vs Omwogezi wa NRM’.

Watchdog Uganda could have carried some of the comments here but most were very insensitive especially to the seasoned spokesperson. But we welcome others.
