The Rubanda district local government has received Shs1 billion from the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
The money is meant to help communities in the subcounties of Muko, Ruhija and Ikumba which neighbour Bwindi National Park.
This was revealed by the Rubanda district Chairperson, Jogo Kenneth Biryabareema while speaking to Watchdog Uganda after the district Council meeting on Tuesday.
“We have as district received Shs1billion from Uganda Wildlife Authority for helping communities around Bwindi National Park,” Biryabareema said.
In the 2017/2018 financial year, the district received Shs220,000,000 from UWA for the same cause, according to Biryabareema. He was pleased that UWA had increased the grant.
UWA usually contributes to communities around parks and other tourism areas so that the communities can take part in tourism conservation.
Biryabareema revealed that the received money would be used to make social facilities like schools, roads and hospitals around Bwindi National Park better.
Bwindi national park attracts thousands of tourists because of being a gorilla hub in Uganda. Despite that, Bwindi Park has exceptional tourist attractions like birds and other wild animals.
The park covers the districts of Kisoro, Kanungu and Rubanda in south-western Uganda, Kigezi sub-region.
