Police has today foiled a planned riot by people in Kisoro over Gen. Kale Kayihura’s arrest.
Kisoro is Kayihura’s home district.
According to Deputy Police spokesman Patrick Onyango, the protest was being organized by a section of Kisoro District leaders.
“I have been informed that there is no notification by the Kisoro leaders to the police, which is a requirement in the Public Order Management Act. The area police have told the mobilisers to follow the right channels to air out their grievance,” Onyango said.
Onyango says the people in Kisoro were mobilized to demonstrate on Thursday morning at Mayor’s Garden in Kisoro Municipality against what they called unfair and shameful act against their gallant son.
Kayihura was arrested and airlifted on Wednesday from his home in Kashagama Lyantonde to Army headquarters in Mbuya.
Prior to his arrest, Kayihura was subsequently summoned to report at the army headquarters and was informed a military helicopter was being dispatched to pick him from his home in Kashagama.
According to a statement released on Wednesday by the army spokesperson, Brig. Richard Karemire, Kayihura was required to report to the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. David Muhoozi, at the army headquarters in Mbuya on June 12, as a serving officer.
“A helicopter was subsequently dispatched on Tuesday to transport him from Kashagama, but on arrival, Gen. Kale had traveled to Mbarara and so it had to return to Entebbe Air Force Base. The helicopter was again yesterday sent back and it has returned safely to Kampala with him on board,” Karemire said.
