The Electoral Commission chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama has defended the presence of security personnel in Rukungiri.
According to Byabakama, the army and police are mandated by law to keep law and order during and after elections.
He said this on Wednesday while addressing the press ahead of Thursday’s woman parliamentary by elections and other newly created four town councils in Rukungiri district.
Byabakama reiterated that elections can’t go on in the country without security because anything bad can interrupt the process.
Byabakama confirmed to the media that two out of six candidates have since withdrawn from the race , and warned the electorate not to vote them, saying that whoever votes for them ,their votes would not be counted.
Those who left the race include: Sheila Atukunda who left the race on 21st May 2018 and Elizabeth Rwakitonera left on 29th May 2018 both independent candidates.
Byabakama confirmed that the remaining candidates are Betty Muzanira of FDC, Winifred Matsiko of NRM, Fabith Kukundakwe of PPP and Prisca Seezi Mbaguta an independent candidate.
Rukungiri district has 177086 voters, and the EC boss said that they don’t expect votes to be more than number of registered voters.
