Veteran journalist Andrew Mwenda has claimed that the sacking of Gen. Kale Kayihura as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) was due to Uganda-Rwanda sour relations.
According to Mwenda, Kayihura’s replacement was not because of increasing crime in the country since there’s no scientific evidence for that but rather president Yoweri Museveni used the allegations of increasing crime, public perception and anger as an excuse to get rid of him.
The socio-political critic thinks the primary reason for firing Kayihura was due to the shifting geopolitical position of Uganda in her relationship with Rwanda.
“When the feud between Kampala and Kigali began, Kayihura confided in friends that when Uganda and Rwanda fight, he pays the price. Being an ethical Munyarwanda, the Ugandan side accuse him of being a mole while the Rwandan side see him as a traitor,” reveals Mwenda.
He says Museveni was convinced by other intelligence organizations that Kayihura allowed Rwanda to use Uganda Police to conduct operations in Uganda in exchange that Rwanda was helping him use police build a political base for his presidential ambitions.
“Given the hostility Kayihura was facing from inside the security circles, the opposition and social media, he became expendable in firing him,” mwenda notes
