Minister for ICT and National Guidance Frank Tumwebaze has directed Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) to investigate telecommunication companies that registered SIM cards with wrong information.

Addressing the press on Monday at Uganda Media Centre, Tumwebaze said any company which shall be found guilty for having violated government policy of registering all SIM cards with national Identity cards, shall be severely punished if possible licenses revoked.

The directive follows security concerns that unscrupulous people obtained unregistered SIM cards to commit crimes in the country.

Tumwebaze further revealed the UCC has been given 14 days to complete investigations into how some alleged Airtel numbers were obtained with wrong or forged identities by suspected criminals.
