Recently Police went under spotlight after photos of tortured Kamwenge Mayor Geoffrey Byamukama surfaced on social media.
Byamukama was arrested on April 5 from the Ministry of Lands offices at Parliamentary Avenue by security operatives who took him to a certain building in Kampala where he was severely tortured.
But later he was transferred to Nalufenya detention Facility and to him this was a turning point which saw his life being saved.
In an interview with The Independent Magazine, Mayor Byamukama said he would probably be dead by now if he was not taken to Nalufenya because by the time he was taken to the detention centre, he was tortured to the extent of losing his life but the officers at the station were seriously concerned about his deteriorating health and made sure he regained his life.
“I would probably be dead, if they had not taken me to Nalufenya. When I reached here, the officers were seriously concerned about my health and made sure that I regain my life,” Byamukama said.
Byamukama said on being transferred to Nalufenyam the commandant ordered for the drugs to be bought and the nurse applied medicine and injections to him though his condition deteriorated and he was referred to Jinja Regional Hospital.
Here the doctors examined him but declined to treat him thus referring him to Mulago Hospital in Kampala.
During that time, Byamukama could not talk, stand or sit. And also could not eat. The policemen at Nalufenya chose to bring him back to the detention facility with his reference letter.
A few days later, the Nalufenya commandant ordered that Byamukama should be taken to Nakasero Hospital in Kampala.
And that is how Byamukama’s life was saved by Nalufenya.
