Prime murder suspect Matthew Kanyamunyu’s woes continue to escalate as Uganda Revenue Authority has sealed off his company Quantum Express Logistics over tax arrears.

Quantum Express Logistics specializes in International Express Courier, back to back Land, Aerial & Maritime Solutions, Air/Ocean Freight, Contract Logistics, Customs Brokerage.

The company was closed for failure to pay Shs13 million accrued from Value Added Tax (VAT). The company is said to have issued cheques to the tax body that bounced in an attempt to pay the bill.

In November 2016, URA signed a memorandum of understanding with the director of Quatum Kanyumunyu to clear a debt of Shs25m which had accumulated over a period of two years.

However, the company, located on second street Industrial Area, is said to have paid only Shs12m and reportedly issued two cheques that bounced.

According to URA, the directors of the company have been given 14 days to clear the debt before the company is handed over to the auctioneers to sell it off in order to recover the said money.

Kanyamunyu who is in Luzira Prison was last month denied bail whereas his girlfriend Cynthia Munwangari and brother Joseph Kanyamunyu were granted one.

Prosecution alleges that the accused and others still at large on November 12, 2016 along Kampala-Jinja road opposite Malik car bond with malice aforethought caused the death of Akena, a community development officer, employed by a local non-governmental organisation. Kanyamunyu is suspected to have shot Akena, 33, in the stomach over the denting of his car. Akena died a day after at Norvik Hospital, on Bombo Road in Kampala. On November 22, last year, the accused were charged with the murder of Akena.

According to the Penal Code Act, murder convicts face a death penalty. In his statement to the Police, Kanyamunyu denied the allegations, saying although he had an exchange with the deceased over ramming into his car, he did not harm him (Akena). Kanyamunyu claims that his only crime was taking Akena to hospital after he was shot.
