Op-ed: Gilbert Bukenya, Aloysius Bugingo FREE to marry again and again

Ours is a hypocritical society. There is someone holding unto others different values than they themselves live. We want to live recklessly, and expect others to be angelic.
In the past couple of months, the guns have been turned on one pastor, Aloysius Bugingo. Going by the interest in his marriage woes he should be a popular person in Uganda or to Ugandans wherever they are.
Bugingo has marital issues with his wife, Teddy. Following reports, he landed a younger and possibly warmer lady. So, he chose to leave the old wine, and take a new one. And he wants to make it official. A divorce petition in court say it all, he is tired of it all.
The righteous on social media have gone after Bugingo. How does he leave his wife of so many years and go after a younger woman? They post.
Then, came the issue of the mansion he building the new catch, reported to be a one Susan Makula. Yes, it a palace which is enviable for a society like ours where building a one bedroom is also an envy of the village. It is understandable.
Before Bugingo went off the news.
Prof Gilbert Bukenya has hit the newsstands.
The former vice president was dragged to court by his wife of four decades. She wants divorce. It is almost unheard of in Ugandan society of a couple, choosing to call it in the evening of their lives. Bukenya’s crime is what we all know – he is a lady’s man. And I am sure Bukenya’s wife has known this fact for all her marriage life. No one should begrudge her.
So what?
Bugingo and Bukenya are big profile people, and so that is why they are grabbing the headlines.
Now if their crime is just loving other people, so, why all this fuss?
Give me one man or woman who married while a virgin and has not looked away for a single day in a decade of marriage, and I’ll show you a liar. And even if the entire world is faithful to their partners. There is always an exception to the rule, even in nature.
However, there is nothing as bad as living in a relationship one doesn’t enjoy. It is better to call it off than drag through life simply because society expects you to behave in a certain way.
Bugingo and Bukenya should be left to enjoy life with the women they love. And also, if they change preference in the future, they should still be left to enjoy their relationships. It is a free world.
People should be left to do what they love as long as it doesn’t break the law.
