Mathias Mpuuga kicks off term as Leader of Opposition with call for unity

The new Leader of Opposition Mathias Mpuuga has called for unity among all members of the opposition if they are to form a solid force that will see them through the 11th Parliament.

As he takes over the mantle as the Leader of Opposition in the 11th Parliament, Nyendo-Mukungwe legislator wants the struggle for unity to be spearheaded by leaders of all opposition political parties purposely to bridge a leadership vacuum that shall form a strong force to reckon with.

Mpuuga’s call follows what happened during the elections of both Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Parliament that openly showed how the opposition is disunited. A vivid example was when Forum for Democratic Change (FDC)’s candidate for Speakership Ibrahim Ssemujju got only 15 votes, which is even less than the number of FDC MPs in the 11th Parliament.

“The divisions within the opposition are not deeply rooted therefore we shall speak to our colleagues and the beauty is that I have worked with most of them, I know them personally and I am going to reach out to them. Some of them have anger however that should not supersede the general desire to calculate a common good,” Mpuuga said.

He added that one of the keys to start with is dialogues to ensure that the opposition gets united as early as possible.

“We have just come out of highly divisive national elections, and I understand why responses for unity are disregarded but we are going to warm up these relations slowly and I’m patient enough to move on it. Of course, I know there are still egos that are still flying and the only way to manage them is by talking to people individually so that they see the bigger need of working together.”
