The Kabale District Woman Member of Parliament, Ms Catherine Ndamira Atwakire has said the government is mindful teachers welfare.
“Government cares about the teachers – because they train future Ugandans,” she said, stressing that the role of the teacher is indispensable in the education of the younger generation who are future leaders of our country.
She made the remarks while addressing hundreds of teachers from Kabale District who had gathered at Kirigime Guest House celebrate the World Teachers day.
At the same function, Ms Atwakire called on the teachers to follow their professional code of conduct when executing their duties.
“Some of the teachers been abusing the pupils sexually, which is embarrassing and a disaster,” she said.
She also called on parents not to leave their parenting and other responsibilities to teachers.
“It was very crucial for parents to provide their children with all scholastic materials, encourage their children to revise books and to do homework,” she urged.
Ndamira contributed Shs1 million towards the teachers’ savings.
The chairperson of UNATU kabale branch Mr Byamugisha in his address highlighted a number of challenges that the teachers in kabale face such as changing of the curriculum every year without refresher courses, meager salaries and, pupils to teacher ratio being higher among others.
The UN world teachers day falls on October 5th to celebrate the role of teachers in providing quality education at all levels.
“The right to education means the right to a qualified teacher ” was the theme of this year 2018.
