University student fakes own kidnap to extort money for business capital

Police in Mbarara have arrested a man who allegedly faked his own kidnap to demand a ransom from his family.

Evans Ariho is accused of disappearing from home without any of his family’s knowledge, and a few days later started calling family members using his phone, claiming that his kidnappers want a ransom of Shs 2 million before he’s killed.

But his family went to the Mbarara Police Station and reported the case, police then arrested and later detained Ariho after coming back from the hiding .

Ariho a resident of Bugamba sub county, Rwampara county Mbarara district and is also a student of Bishop Stuart University Kakoba, Mbarara .

Evans says that he kidnapped himself for money to boost his business.

The Rwizi region Police commander Samson has confirmed that Ariho is currently detained at Mbarara central Police station and that he will soon be taken to courts of law on charges of demanding money by false pretense.

He has advised the youth to involve themselves in income generating activities than faking their own kidnap for money.

Recently, a 21-year-old woman Mariam Uwase staged her own kidnap to extort Shs 25 million from boyfriend in kampala.

Also, a 19-year-old student, Peace Ansiimirwe recently staged her own kidnap with the intention to extort money from her mother.

Ansiimirwe is a resident of Bushenyi-Ishaka in Bushenyi District and is currently on remand in Luzira prison with her boy friend.
