Uganda Police has refuted media Daily monitor newspaper claims that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kale Kayihura is giving prostitutes and boda boda cyclists money to spy.
The story in the newspaper partly states that the police chief gave each of the 200 sex workers at least shs200,000 after a meeting last Sunday adding that Kayihura ordered bar owners where sex workers operate to hire taxis to transport them to and from work to ensure their safety.
According to the police spokesperson AIGP Asan Kasingye, the monitor story is distorted and misleading.
“We wish to inform the general public that the Daily Monitor’s story is not only distorted but also misleading. It is true that the IGP has been meeting residents especially women , children and the youth in the areas of Nansana municipality and Katabi Town council in Wakiso district in relation to murder of 17 women and girls that took place between the 3rd of May and 18th August , 2017,” stated Kasingye.
“The IGP also never stated that bar owners should provide transport to sex workers but advised that bars and other business owners like supermarkets can afford to provide transport to their workers to safely transport then on and off duty during the wee hours of the morning or late at night,” he added.
