Police has come out to deny torture allegations by the 13 people implicated in the murder of former police spokesperson AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi, his body guard and driver.
Recently during court session, the suspects complained of being tortured by police in an inhuman way.
But according to Police spokesperson Asan Kasingye that these media claims that the suspects suffered from torture and ill treatment during police custody at Nalufenya Special Investigations centre are not true.
“It is on record that police work very closely with relevant stakeholders including in the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC), to enhance and promote the principles of Human Rights and also preserve the dignity of all persons in custody. On 2nd May 12, 2017, the chairperson UHRC, Mr. Medi Kaggwa, and his team , visited the facility and interfaced with the all suspects and accused persons, including the 13the 13; where he established that the safeguards against torture and ill treatment at the facility were satisfactory. He acknowledged a complaint from one of the accused persons who complained of a medical condition while passing urine, and instructed the police to subject him to medical examination at an independent medical facility. This was expressively done, where it was ascertained that the accused had no medical condition at all,” He said.
Kasingye further says two other suspects had old healed wounds that were sustained before admission into the police facility.
“The chairperson of UHRC, Mr. Medi Kagwa even called the Inspector General of Police on phone to express his satisfaction of the human rights condition of the suspects,”
“There’s therefore, no basis for the media claims, as the facts are unverified . The facility at Nalufenya, is gazzeted and well regulated and conforms highly to international best practice on the detention and wellbeing of suspects,”
