President Yoweri Museveni has reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to promoting peace in Africa as he welcomed His Excellency Ramtane Lamamra, the United Nations Special Envoy to Sudan, and discussed the ongoing conflict in Sudan. The meeting, held at State House Entebbe Monday /7th/October, featured the ongoing civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which erupted in April 2023.
Known for his longstanding role in peacekeeping efforts across Africa, Museveni highlighted Uganda’s readiness to mediate in the conflict. “Uganda is still open to mediating between the warring factions; however, we urge all parties to cease hostilities and empower the citizens,” Museveni posted.
The conflict, which began during Ramadan on April 15, 2023, and has pitted Sudanese military factions led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF leader Hemedti, is devastating for the region and must come to an end. Museveni called for a peaceful resolution, echoing his previous successes in fostering peace across the East, and entire Africa, including Somalia, where Uganda’s UPDF has played a key role in stabilizing the country.
Uganda, having a strong history of peacekeeping in the region, stands as a pivotal actor in the Sudanese peace process. President Museveni’s track record of successful mediations across Africa, coupled with Uganda’s willingness to engage in regional stability efforts, could prove instrumental in bringing an end to the conflict.
