The Mbarara municipality mayor, Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi has expressed great optimism that the recently installed traffic lights in Mbarara town will control traffic jams, saying that the town is growing at a rapid speed with steady increase of in the number of cars.
The project which was funded by World Bank saw the municipality getting traffic lights for the first time in history.
Kakyebezi said the municipality will be embarking on a massive sensitization campaign on how to use traffic lights in Mbarara town, more especially with Boda boda operators.
He revealed that the first phase of the project was provided free of charge by World Bank under the Uganda Support to Municipality Infrastructure Development (USIMID) adding that they are planning to install more.
He said the first lights were put up to manage traffic from Bishop Stuart University toward the city center.
The Rwizi Regional Traffic Officer, ASP Justin Opus said that the traffic lights will not only reduce traffic jam, but
also road accidents.
