NBS’s senior journalist Simon Muyanga Lutaaya has today been released by Court in Jinja after paying a court fine worth shs57 million.
Muyanga was arrested in Jinja and sent to Kirinya prison following an arrest warrant which was issued in January by Jesse Byaruhanga, the Jinja High Court registrar.
The renowned media personality who contested on Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) ticket was fined after he lost the cases at Jinja High Court and Court of Appeal which he had filed against NRM’s Kenneth Lubogo’s victory in the 2016 parliamentary elections.
Muyanga was defended by a team of lawyers led by Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago.
Early this week, FDC instituted a steering committee to spearhead a fundraising campaign aimed at saving Muyanga from prison.
The committee was chaired by Asuman Kiyingi , Counsel Paul Luganda as the Vice Chairperson, Proscovia Salaamu Musumba as the treasurer, Sam Ibanda Mugabi as the representative from Muyanga’s work place and Kungu Al-Mahadi Adam in charge of public relations.
Prior the court fine was supposed to be shs300 million but Lukwago managed to convince court to reduce it to shs57 million.
