Emma Mugisha was on Friday nominated to become Stanbic Bank’s next Executive Director by the commercial bank’s top board.

However, Mugisha’s new role will be determined by Bank of Uganda’s approval.

Stanbic Bank is Uganda’s largest bank holding asset value of 6.6 trillion and a market share of 20.2 per cent. In the lending industry of Uganda, it takes Shs2.85 trillion or 20 per cent.

If her ascension passes through, she will be the second in command of the bank, deputising Anne Juuko, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

Mugisha will still retain her current position as the Head, Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB), a position she attained in December 2018.

CIB is also one of the remunerative part of the Stanbic Uganda business, almost generating over 41 per cent revenue for the bank.

The business unit includes services to governments, parastatals, larger corporates, and high net worth individuals, financial institutions and international counterparties.

Before heading CIB, Mugisha was serving as the Head, Transactional Products and Services at Stanbic Bank since 2013.

Who is Emma Mugisha?

She holds Master of Business Administration RSM Erasmus Universiteit and MBA from Makerere University. She also serves on the board of Financial Sector Deepening Uganda (FSDU).

She worked for 3 years at Faulu Uganda (now Opportunity Bank) as a Loans Officer. From she went to Citibank as the Treasury Marketing Unit Head

In 2004, November she joined Barclays Bank (now Absa Bank Uganda) in November 2004 as the Country Treasurer, then became the Head of Business Banking where she spent 7 years. While at Absa Bank Uganda she crossed to Kenya where she was the Head of Industry, Trade and Services, Business Banking. In 2013 Emma crossed over to Stanbic.

Emma climbs to the second biggest position of the biggest bank in Uganda with a solid 24-year banking career acquired through five across banks these include; Opportunity Bank, Citi Bank, Absa Bank Uganda, Absa Bank Kenya and Stanbic.

Emma’s appointment will make Stanbic bank the second bank in Uganda bank to have only female Chief Executive Directors, following Finance Trust Bank.
