The task before all opposition political parties now, is ‘to face the Dictator from all angles and finally over throw the Junta to restore Democracy in Uganda,’ Betty Nambooze has said.
Nambooze was speaking in her capacity as spokesperson of the ‘people’s government’ a loose coalition of opposition politicians ready to end President Museveni’s three decade reign. It is led by former FDC president and presidential candidate, Kizza Besigye.
On Thursday, opposition parties Social Democratic Party led by Michael Mabikke, Justice Forum’s Asuman Basalirwa, and Norbert Mao’s Democratic Party launched a new opposition bloc dubbed ‘Democratic Party bloc’ at Hotel Africana.
Also in attendance were Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi and Alliance for National Transformation, Mugisha Muntu.
At the launch, Basalilwa, Mabikke and Kyagulanyi among others attacked Besigye for refusing to join hands in the fight to oust Museveni.
Kyagulanyi said, “For a leader to say a vote can never oust Museveni without offering a solution is disappointing… Don’t talk about democracy and stand four times and on the fifth time you say it doesn’t work, we believe it works. We continue to call Ugandans to register as voters and be many. The power of people has prevailed in Kyadondo East, Bugiri, Rukungiri, Arua and we believe it will prevail in the whole Uganda in 2021.”
Bwanika also urged Besigye ‘to step aside’ and give way for Kyagulanyi.
But Nambooze, the Mukono Municipality MP, took exception at those attacking her ‘president’, arguing that ‘we shall continue to tolerate and keep quiet about some voices attacking FDC as a party, Dr. Besigye as a person and people’s Government as a platform that brings together activists of Change from different backgrounds.’
Her full statement:
“We in the People’s Government welcome any activity that pushes the struggle forward even if it’s not led by us…we shall continue to tolerate and keep quiet about some voices attacking FDC as a party, Dr. Besigye as a person and people’s Government as a platform that brings together activists of Change from different backgrounds. We realise that we are operating in a very fragile environment and conflicts among the oppressed Ugandans can only spoil the struggle that we all hold so dear. What we need is Unity demonstrated by action and negotiated by all stakeholders
We don’t even consider it necessary to explain ourselves against accusations being raised against us by some comrades in the struggle for fear of being misunderstood or falling prey to distortions; we trust that time will solve the contradictions that may be existing among forces of change. We are also of the opinion that throwing jabs, maligning, blackmailing or targeting each other will only be diversionary. The task before all of us is to face the Dictator from all angles and finally over throw the Junta to restore Democracy in Uganda.
We therefore welcome the DP-bloc and call on everybody and more especially our supporters to concentrate on fighting the Dictatorship. We encourage everybody to recorgonise that it’s incumbent upon us to respect each other and any addition or effort on our side is a great contribution to the struggle, fighters may differ in strategy but as long as we are pushing to the same direction, victory will be ours.”
