Mukono Municipality Member of Parliament (MP) Betty Nambooze has requested Buganda Katikiro Charles Peter Mayiga not to accept the new National Resistance Movement Buganda caucus.
According to Nambooze, it was formed out of laws governing Parliament and also to fight the original Buganda caucus.
Last week, NRM leaning MPs while at a party retreat at National Leadership Institute (NALI) in Kyankwanzi, formed a parallel Buganda caucus to coordinate party activities among themselves on the legislative assembly. Kabula Constituency Legislator James Kakooza was chosen to be chairperson, deputised by Hajat Syda Bbumba from Nakaseke South Constituency.
Others members on the committee include, Bukoto South’s Muyanja Mbabaali (Treasurer), Kasozi Muyomba of Bukoto Mid-West (General Secretary) and Kasanda South’s Simeo Nsubuga elected Publicity Secretary while Chief Whip and Kiboga district Woman Representative Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu as an ex-officio. Bukuya MP Dr Michael Bukenya Kyabikoola is a Committee Member and Sam Kuteesa Kahamba was elected Patron.
According to Nsubuga, this caucus was put up to lobby for programmes and projects from the government to benefit the entire Buganda Kingdom.
However, Nambooze while at Bulange Mengo on Saturday refuted Nsubuga’s arguments and said this is President Museveni’s struggle to disorganise the only regional parliamentarian caucus that has been active.
“This is a group of destructors who will not respect Mengo’s interests but rather respect the interests of their supreme leader Museveni. Secondly, this group was formed under what laws? If it was to be a group of mutual interests they would have followed the law,” said Nambooze.
Nambooze who was once the deputy chairperson of the Buganda caucus added, “With all due respect I request our dear Katikiiro not to accept this group because two kings can’t rule in one kingdom. The original Buganda caucus respects and takes Buganda King as their only commanding voice however, the NRM Buganda caucus takes Museveni.”
Mengo is yet to respond
