The Uganda Human Rights Commission has ordered the inspector general of police to release Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze unconditionally.
The commission warned that if anything happens to the legislator, the IGP will personally be liable to the grave judgment error.
The move follows the petition Nambooze’s lawyer lodged to the UHRC asking them to intervene in Police’s continued detention of the bedridden legislator for more than a week.
Nambooze has been hospitalized in detention since her health deteriorated while in detention at Naggalama police station where she spent the Idd weekend on allegations she wrong unflattering comments about slain Arua MP Ibrahim Abiriga.
Prior to her arrest Nambooze was due to travel to India to under further management on her back, after she was inserted with metallic objects to enable keep movements. The metallic objects has been reported to have moved after a police vehicle knocked the ambulance which was transporting Nambooze from Naggalama to Kiruddu hospital. The police vehicle has never been impounded.
The letter signed by UHRC executive director Meddie Kaggwa who a few days ago visited Nambooze in hospital said the state of the legislator cannot allow her to defend herself in court. He asked that the IGP intervenes to allow Nambooze travel for specialized treatment.
