On Tuesday, children of the late Andrew Lutakome Kayiira paid a courtesy visit to Mukono Municipality MP, Betty Nambooze at her home in Mukono.

They discussed a lot of burning issues but most notably they revealed that they are planning to commemorate 30 years of their father’s assassination on 8 March at Rubaga Cathedral.

“ The Kayiiras came to see me….they carry a striking resemblance of their late father Andrew Lutakome Kayiira…..on 8th March at Rubaga cathedral we shall mark 30years of his demise  and pray for his departed soul at 2:00pm……be there please,” Nambooze posted on her social media.

Kayiira (30 January 1945 – 9 March 1987), M.A., PhD, was the leader of the Uganda Freedom Movement (UFM), a guerrilla organization that fought the governments of Milton Obote and Tito Okello between 1980 and 1986. Kayiira and the UFM were often seen as a rival to the National Resistance Movement (NRM) led by Yoweri Museveni which was also fighting a guerrilla war against the Obote and Okello governments. When the NRM took power in 1986, Kayiira was appointed Minister for Energy by Museveni. Later that year, Kayiira was arrested for treason but later released. He was murdered by unknown gunmen on 9 March 1987.
