The state minister for Information Technology and communications (ICT), Idah Erios Nantaba has punched holes in the cabinet ICT minister, Frank Tumwebaze’s promise of providing free public WIFI services to the people in the city centre as well to each district headquarters in Uganda.
In September Tumwebaze claimed that his ministry had launched free internet services in Kampala but his internet has never worked even on a single day.
Joyous Nantaba says what the minister launched was a blindfolded promise which he couldn’t fulfill because the government doesn’t have money to invest in such yet it has more burning issues to work on like constructing hospitals, roads among others.
“I asked the minister where he was going to get the money to fulfill the promise since the ministry never had money to facilitate his project,” Nantaba said.
“The government doesn’t have money to provide free internet to people and on top of that we have what we call a national structure backbone which we focus on and it’s still difficult to put up a cable which can transmit internet service throughout the whole country since the government doesn’t have such kind of money even in Kayunga the cable hasn’t reached yet,” she added.
