South Sudan’s president Salva Kiir officially sanctioned the army to bombard the home of renegade First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar and his forces at Jebel Kujur. On July 8, Kiir ordered his forces to look for Machar to kill or capture him.
Chief of General Staff, Gen. Paul Malong Awan directed the Deputy Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Mangar Buong Alueng, to carry out the operation.
The army has carried out heavy artillery, aerial bombardment and infantry offensives against the Machar’s hide out in Jebel Kujur.
“As per the commander in chief (C-in-C) directive, I am hereby directing you to immediately carry out artillery, aerial bombardment and launch infantry offensive on the defensive positions residence of Dr. Riek Machar and his forces at Jebel Kujur,” a confidential directive leak states.
The Chief of army ordered his troops to disarm the SPLA-IO infantry, an order that turned fatal and left many SPLA troops dead.
“Disarm and arrest all his bodyguards” the directive orders.
“Use all the forces including the attack helicopters in the operation,” Gen. Malong orders.
“Make sure the UNMISS POC is seal off and if there is any resistance from the UN forces you have to deal with them head on,” Gen. Malong states.
At least two UN peacekeepers were killed and five others were injured in the fighting. Civilians in protection sites were either killed or suffered wounds from direct attacks on the UNMISS compounds.
