Mrs Alessi Nesta is a leader based in Arua district who represents the mothers of the persons with disabilities in Arua District.
She says her daughter became paralyzed due to the fact that she had on and off malaria which they under looked at first. But how ever, things became worse.
The 23 year old girl’s her father died when she was still three years old. Since then things did not turn out positive but as time went on Nesta realized she had to do something special to make her daughter live a healthy and positive life.
They opted to start up a small group with seven people who are now the living example in the area that even the people with disability can do something better.
With the National Union of the disabled Persons in Uganda (NUDIPU), they have managed to think beyond the box.
The major challenge she faces is that medicine is expensive and if someone gets a chance to get it from abroad, again the tax is too much for the patient.
On this note ,Hajj Bumali Mpindi, the board director of the NUDIPU urged the government to allow tax exemption to the persons with disabilities.
Nesta says that her daughter indeed was affected that even the pace of her understanding things is very low. She says that it is sad yet true , her daughter started knowing how to write her names when she was in primary seven.
On a good note, she says that the doctors advised her that the girl first must reach 30 years of age so as to be able to have strong blood that can help her fight the situation.
Indeed she is now witnessing it since the 23 year old girl can now knit and get some money to pay a tithe in the church where she prays from. She also says that the girl has completed school in a technical institute in Arua.
She urged the government to increase on the grant of money that they give to the persons with disabilities so as to enable them do more of what was not expected out of them.
She urged parents to always take note of what kind of medicines that they are giving to such disabled children.
Mr Amis Ayoma, the district local government officer in Arua district is happy with the NRM government which has just provided them with wheel chairs to assist the people with disabilities.
