National Environmental Management Authority( NEMA) in collaboration with police have arrested 10 employees of Aqua World Uganda Ltd, a company owned by city Pastor Samuel Kakande for illegal sand mining, swamp reclamation and deforestation with the aim of planting rice in Masaka district.
The employees were arrested from kaziru landing site in Bukakata sub county in Masaka district.
Last month, police directed Aqua World Uganda Limited to stop operating from the landing site after violating the operational license terms but the company gave a deaf ear to the order.
Dr Jerome Ssebaduka, an official from NEMA said the Authority gave Aqua World Uganda a license permitting them to plant palm oil in the area but to their surprise, they received reports that the company was planting ricr and extracting sand which contradicts with the license conditions thus they couldn’t accept the such act.
