Entebbe. The ministry of Fisheries has confiscated illegal fishing nets worth Sh6 billion.
While addressing press during the display of the nets, Dr. Edward Rukuunya, the acting director fisheries and resources stated that the nets were recovered this morning from Uganda fishnet manufacturers company during an operation conducted by the directorate officials.
Rukuunya said this is the fifth incident of illegal fish nets being recovered.
“Use of illegal fishing nets is one of the major problems that we face in the fishing sector and it leads to decline in the fish stocks and has led to an annual loss of USD 400 million in the economy annually.”
He explained that the nets will be destroyed.
